On June 25, 2020, a case against Taita-Taveta County Government was heard in the Voi Senior Resident Magistrate's Court. The case, filed by former Wundanyi Chief Gideon Mwasingo, concerns Sh5.5 million rent arrears.
According to the court documents, Mwasingo had leased his commercial building to the county government in December 2016 for three years. However, the county administration failed to settle the outstanding debt, which includes over Sh4.2 million carried forward, Sh660,000 rent for May-July 2020, and Sh1.6 million for renovation costs.
Lawyer Duncan Mwanyumba, representing Mwasingo, stated that the county government had failed to attend the interpartes hearing and had not provided a valid reason for their absence. The court has fixed a new date for the hearing on July 1, 2020.
County Legal Advisor Edwin Chahilu could not be reached for comment, as his mobile phone went unanswered.
