On June 25, 2020, Ruiru town in Kiambu County took a major step towards its bid for city status, with the county government and its partners working tirelessly to upgrade its infrastructure.
According to Martin Kangiri, the Kiambu county program coordinator for urban areas, the development will not only put the populous town on the national map but also improve the local economy.
With a population of over 400,000 people, as per the 2019 national census, Ruiru town is the fourth most populated town in Kenya after Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru.
The town has already made significant progress, with over 60 industries, a growing number of real estate companies, and other businesses.
Since 2018/2019, the municipality has received 484 million shillings, which has been used to renovate parking spaces, tarmac link roads, and install solar and electric lights to facilitate better and secure movement of persons even at night.
Speaking while inspecting infrastructure upgrades, Kangiri revealed that the town has the potential to create jobs for its people, with the elevation of the city status.
As part of the efforts to achieve city status, the municipality has embarked on constructing various national-standard infrastructures, including a sporting field equipped with lights, spectating stands, a swimming pool, and other gaming zones.
Ruiru Constituency is also home to major investment projects, such as Tatu City and the upcoming Northerlands City, as well as all-time railway services.
