On June 25, 2020, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho visited Gikomba market to assess the damage caused by a fire outbreak that affected 399 households.

Speaking to the press, Kibicho stated that the government did not believe the fire was accidental and had launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators.

"We as the government do not think these fires are natural. We believe there are people who think by evacuating traders from this place they will get land to develop. I want to assure the country that Gikomba will remain public land and we will protect it," said Kibicho.

The government has promised to compensate the affected traders and has also planned to erect a parameter wall around the market to prevent future incidents.

According to Kibicho, the parameter wall is expected to be ready in approximately three months, and the market will also have a borehole installed.

Gikomba market has been experiencing recurring cases of fire outbreaks, which have raised concerns among traders and the general public.
