On June 25, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a groundbreaking initiative to boost nutrition and food security in Kenya. The ambitious plan, dubbed the One Million Kitchen Gardens Plan, aims to establish one million kitchen gardens over the next two years.
According to Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary Anne Nyaga, the project will target households with more than five family members, providing them with alternative livelihoods and promoting healthy diets. The initiative is part of the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on improving nutrition and reducing post-harvest losses.
Under the project, each household will receive five vegetable seed varieties, as well as grants to venture into fish and poultry farming. Additionally, a group of households will be offered grain dryers to minimize post-harvest losses.
The project also includes training on proper crop husbandry to engage in the programme's value chain. The goal is to mainstream nutrition in the agriculture value chain and provide alternative incomes for selected households.
Makueni County hosted the launch of the national One Million Kitchen Gardens Plan, with at least 15,000 households in the area set to benefit from the project.
