On June 25, 2020, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho announced the government's plan to build a perimeter wall around Gikomba market in Nairobi to prevent future arson attacks.
Speaking after assessing the damage caused by a recent fire incident, Kibicho stated that the market's infrastructure would also be modernized, with the first phase set to be completed within three months.
According to Kibicho, the perimeter wall will isolate the market and accommodate up to 10,000 people. He emphasized that the government will continue to build new markets to absorb affected traders, warning that there is no possibility of the area being converted into private spaces.
While acknowledging that the fire incidents are deliberate acts of arson, Kibicho warned those behind such attacks, stating that those found culpable will be charged in court.
The PS urged members of the community to volunteer information regarding the fire incident to the office of Nairobi Regional Commander, assuring business people affected by the incident of government's support.
