On June 25, 2020, Vybz Kartel and his co-convicts, Kahira Jones, Shawn 'Storm' Campbell, and Andre St. John, were convicted of the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams. Now, they are seeking to have their appeal officially heard by the Privy Council in the UK.
The move has seen them seek leave from the Jamaica Court of Appeal, which is a requirement for appeals to the Privy Council. These appeals are restricted to cases of a certain monetary value or where they are of exceptional public importance.
According to media reports, the proceedings will take place next Monday, June 29. This is not the first time Vybz Kartel has had a legal victory at the Jamaican Court of Appeal. Earlier this year, his sentence was reduced from life to 32 years and 6 months, making him eligible for parole in 2046, aged 70.
Vybz Kartel has been incarcerated since 2011 and has continued to release music from behind bars. He was convicted of murder in 2014 and was denied an appeal to revoke his sentence earlier this month as he continues to protest his innocence.
