Published on June 25, 2020, in Mombasa County, a landlord has threatened to auction the household items of 16 families living in a 4-storey apartment in Bamburi over Ksh400,000 rent arrears.
The property owner, through his lawyer, has given the tenants eviction and auction notices, citing that they have defaulted on rent for two months.
One of the tenants, Morris Okoth, stated that they had held talks with the landlord a few days ago and agreed on how to settle their rent arrears without affecting their tenancy.
However, Okoth expressed shock that the landlord's lawyer gave them eviction and auction notices, contradicting their previous agreement.
The tenants claim that subsequent attempts to seek dialogue with the landlord have been unsuccessful, and they are now appealing to him to reconsider his decision.
Rahab Nabala, a tenant who has stayed in the apartment for seven years, urged the landlord to be considerate, especially during the coronavirus crisis, and to allow them to settle their debts.
