Published on June 25, 2020, Tanzania's government has reiterated its appeal to lenders for the cancellation of debts owed by developing countries, including itself, to enable them to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister Palamagamba Kabudi made the appeal during a video conference meeting with Commonwealth officials, where they discussed ways to support developing countries in building capacity for medical supply production and exchanging technology for healthcare delivery.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Kabudi emphasized that debt cancellation would allow developing countries to redirect funds earmarked for debt repayment towards mitigating the impacts of the pandemic.

President John Magufuli had previously made a similar appeal in April 2020, calling on the World Bank and other international financial institutions to cancel debts owed by developing countries to enable them to combat the pandemic.
