Published on June 25, 2020, Kisii Senator Prof Sam Ongeri has been elected as the new Chairperson of the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC).
Prof Ongeri's election comes after a tumultuous period for the committee, which had seen Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina elected as chair in May. However, Ole Kina's election was short-lived, as he was subsequently ejected from the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) after the party accused him of defying its position to elect Kisii Senator Ongeri as the Chair.
Despite the controversy surrounding his election, Ole Kina had moved to court to halt his removal from the committee, citing a High Court ruling that had halted the removal of Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina from the powerful Senate Committee in May.
As the new Chairperson of CPAIC, Prof Ongeri will be responsible for overseeing the expenditure of billions of shillings given to all 47 counties under the Division of Revenue and other conditional grants.
Marsabit Senator Hargura Godana has been elected as the new vice chairperson of CPAIC.
