On June 25, 2020, a significant development in Bomet county politics took place when former Governor Isaac Ruto of Chama Cha Mashinani signed a political pact with the ruling Jubilee Party, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta. This move is expected to change the dynamics of the 2022 governor's election, potentially altering the fortunes of incumbent Governor Hillary Barchok.

As a result of the pact, Ruto, who was a strong contender for the governor's seat in 2022, is likely to focus on national politics, given his close ties to the President and his party's alignment with Jubilee. This shift in focus could create a three-horse race for the governor's seat, with CAS Joseph Mosonik of Petroleum, Julius Kones, and Barchok emerging as the top contenders.

Other notable aspirants for the governor's seat include Senator Christopher Langat, county member of parliament Joyce Korir, and Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui. Barchok, however, may face a tough challenge in retaining his seat, especially if he decides to run for the Bomet East MP position instead.

The balance of power in Bomet county is also at play, with the Konoin sub-county seeking to have one of its own in a top seat. Julius Kones, a resident of Konoin, may benefit from this sentiment, potentially giving him an edge in the election.
