On June 24, 2020, Kenya's Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed commissioned the construction of a new stadium in Kisumu, marking a significant boost for local athletes.

The 20,000-seater Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium will be built at the grounds of ASK Mamboleo show ground and will be renamed after Kenya's first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Speaking at the event, CS Amina said, "President Kenyatta promised to build an international stadium in Kisumu, which would serve all the Lake Region Economic block and today, we are laying ground for the construction of this stadium."

She added that the stadium will provide athletes from the area with an opportunity to improve their talent, citing the success of teams such as Kisumu All Stars, Lakers Hockey Club, and Kisumu RFC.

CS Amina also renamed the historic Jomo Kenyatta sports ground after Kenya's first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, in tribute to the nation's iconic figures.
