On June 26, 2020, a devastating fire swept through Nairobi's Gikomba Market, destroying property worth millions and displacing many traders from across the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the police to investigate the cause of the fire, vowing to take action against those responsible.

"The incident has displaced many traders from all over the country and investigations should be launched to find the culprits and action be taken against them," he said.

He also pledged that the government would help in rebuilding the market, saying, "The Government will stand with the affected traders by building the market to enable them continue with their business."

The fire occurred at around 3am on Friday morning, and the President was speaking at Maua stadium during his campaign tour in Meru County, where he was accompanied by his Deputy William Ruto and other leaders.
