As of June 24, 2020, Kenya had reported 5,206 COVID-19 cases and 130 fatalities since mid-March, when the first case was detected.

The Ministry of Health has identified Nairobi and Mombasa as the COVID-19 hotspots in the country, with the two counties accounting for 2,555 and 1,340 cases respectively, out of the total 5,206 cases detected.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry, Nairobi and Mombasa have the highest attack rates of COVID-19 in the country, with 107.9 and 55.2 cases per 100,000 population respectively, compared to the country's overall rate of 10.4 per 100,000 population.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi attributed the high disparity in COVID-19 cases between the two counties and the rest of the country to various factors, including the adherence to COVID-19 measures and the high importation of cases during the initial spread of the virus.

“It is a function of multiple variables, there are certain variables in regards to adherence of measures, for these two counties, we had many import cases coming here at the beginning of the pandemic,” Dr. Mwangangi said.

The Ministry of Health has urged people residing in Nairobi and Mombasa to be more alert and adhere to the guidelines issued by the government to prevent the spread of the virus.
