On June 24, 2020, a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
The earthquake, which was felt as far away as Mexico City, approximately 700 kilometers from the epicenter in Oaxaca, sent people fleeing their homes and workplaces.
According to Governor Alejandro Murat, the death toll from the quake has risen to seven, with 2,000 homes damaged and first responders still working to remove debris from a highway.
"My condolences – at the moment, there are seven deaths in Oaxaca state," Governor Murat said in an interview with Milenio TV.
Earlier, the national civil protection coordinator, David Leon, reported that 23 people have been injured in the quake.
Additionally, a fire broke out at the Mexican Oil refinery in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, which was immediately extinguished, but the refinery was shut down as a precaution.
One of the victims was a worker at the refinery who fell off a high structure and lost their life.
