Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's health has been a subject of speculation in recent days, but his family has now confirmed that he is receiving treatment in Dubai.
According to Oburu Odinga, the former premier's spokesperson, Raila was flown to Dubai on June 21 for a minor surgical operation on his back. The procedure is not a serious health issue, and Raila is being monitored by medical professionals.
Oburu Odinga stated, "Jakom is out of the country for a minor surgical operation on his back. It is not a serious health issue but just a minor one. So he is okay." He also confirmed that Raila is being monitored at a German facility in Dubai.
The confirmation effectively puts to rest speculations about Raila's trip to China, which had been circulating on social media. Oburu Odinga refuted the rumors, stating that Raila had not set foot in China this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions.
"He is not in China. The last time he was there I think was in December last year before the Coronavirus pandemic. Right now, if you want to get there, you must be ready for a 14-day quarantine. That is not tenable so there is no way he could have gone there," Oburu Odinga added.
Another family member confirmed that Raila is active on the family's WhatsApp group and periodically updates them on his condition.
