Published on June 25, 2020, the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has blacklisted five Iranian ship captains who delivered 1.5 million barrels of gasoline and oil to Venezuela in recent weeks.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the sanctions, stating that mariners who do business with Iran and Venezuela will face consequences from the United States.

"Mariners who do business with Iran and Venezuela will face consequences from the United States of America," Pompeo said.

As a result of the sanctions, the captains' assets will be blocked, and their careers and prospects will suffer from this designation, Pompeo added.

The move comes as Venezuela accused the United States of an act of provocation after a US warship steamed close to the country's territorial waters.
