Published on June 25, 2020, a dramatic scene unfolded at City Hall early on Thursday morning as Matopeni MCA Abdi Guyo led a group of MCAs in a bid to forcefully remove Speaker Beatrice Elachi from her office.
According to Speaker Elachi, the group had hired goons to carry out the operation, which led to a chaotic situation with police lobbing teargas to disperse the rowdy young men.
"There are young people together with former Majority Leader Guyo in their vehicles with guns but we thank God that all the members are safe inside," Speaker Elachi reported in a phone call.
The Speaker further claimed that the problems with the county assembly have been aggravated by lack of diligence from Jubilee party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju, who failed to enforce her ruling at the floor of the county assembly.
Nominated MCA June Ndegwa, who was holed up with the Speaker, alleged that the situation was a result of a fight between Nairobi County and the Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
The county administration is seeking to have the county assembly reverse the deed of transfer signed with the national government, which led to the current standoff.
