Published on June 25, 2020, a man was arrested in Nairobi for allegedly impersonating a police officer and defrauding members of the public.

Stanley Maina, who has been wanted at several police stations in Nairobi, was detained at Kabete police station pending investigations into multiple cases of obtaining money by false pretences.

According to Corporal David Othach, who obtained the detention orders from Makadara law courts, Maina would call victims and claim to be close to solving their cases, but needed money for facilitation.

One of the victims, a woman who had reported a rape case, was asked to send Sh6,000 to an M-Pesa number in the name of Francis Kangethe, which was later switched off.

Maina was arrested by officers from Buruburu police station and found with a phone and SIM card that he had been using in the alleged fraudulent activities.

He was later charged at Makadara law courts with five different cases of obtaining money by false pretences, cheating, and impersonating police officers, but was released on cash bails totalling Sh150,000.

However, he was rearrested and detained at Kabete police station, where he remains pending further investigations.
