On June 24, 2020, Senegal's President Macky Sall started a preventative two-week quarantine after being in contact with someone who had contracted the coronavirus. The president had already tested negative for the disease.
Senegal has reported over 6,100 Covid-19 cases and 93 deaths since the pandemic began. A state of emergency, which was put in place in March, is slowly being lifted.
"In line with medical advice on the matter, President Sall has put himself in quarantine for two weeks from Wednesday," said Seydou Gueye, the president's spokesman, in a televised statement.
Several high-ranking politicians worldwide have contracted the virus, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was hospitalized and has since recovered.
