As of June 20th, 2020, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has begun delisting the Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) of tax defaulters, effectively crippling their ability to conduct business in Kenya.
According to KRA Commissioner Elizabeth Meyo, this move follows the expiry of a window given to tax defaulters to pay up or propose a payment plan.
With tax defaulters owing the government in excess of Sh250 billion, Meyo stated that those affected will have their PINs deregistered and their assets sold to recover unpaid monies in taxes as prescribed by the law.
Under the Tax Procedures Act of 2015, KRA has the powers to auction assets owned by tax defaulters in addition to prosecuting them.
Without a PIN, individuals and companies can no longer register, transfer, or license motor vehicles or register a business under their name.
