On June 25, 2020, police in Mombasa launched a raid on an apartment in the Nyali suburb, arresting nine people suspected of being behind a car break-in syndicate in the coastal city.
The suspects, aged between 21 and 30 years, were taken to the Nyali police station after the early morning raid at the Furaha apartments.
Police found a stash of drugs, including bhang, shisha, miraa, and alcohol, in the house where the suspects had converged for what appeared to be a house party.
Additionally, Sh100,000 in 1,000 shilling notes was recovered from the suspects.
Two women were among the nine suspects arrested, and police also found three vehicles believed to have been stolen in the parking yard of the apartment.
The vehicles, a Toyota Allion, a Toyota Mark X, and a Nissan Note, are suspected to have been used by the suspects for escape after stealing from people's cars.
According to Nyali Sub-County Police Commander Daniel Masaba, the suspects' modus operandi involves targeting people who come from banks, breaking into cars, and stealing from them.
Mr. Masaba stated, 'We are currently probing the ownership of these vehicles that we have found in their possession.'
