On June 15, 2020, Abdikadir Adow, a businessman and fuel station owner, was allegedly beaten by two police officers, Njoroge and Chirchir, attached to Litein Police Station.
According to a letter written by lawyer Peter Okiro on behalf of Adow, the officers attacked Adow without reason, leaving him unconscious and stealing Sh18,500 from him in the process.
The letter, dated June 25, 2020, was copied to several authorities, including the Director of Criminal Investigations, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chair of the Independent Police Oversight Authority.
Adow was taken to Kapketet Hospital, where he was given medication based on the officers' claims that he had a history of epilepsy and high blood pressure.
However, the lawyer claims that the report of the incident was altered, and Adow was charged with resisting arrest before Kericho Law Courts.
“Why would somebody found unconscious resist arrest? And why were the charges hurriedly crafted when our client insisted on having the officers prosecuted,” Okiro posed in the letter.
The lawyer has demanded that the officers be investigated and possibly prosecuted within seven days, failing which he will institute legal action against them.
