On June 24, 2020, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report was expected to be released, with President Uhuru Kenyatta and former PM Raila Odinga having been briefed on its progress by Hon. Yussuf Haji.
According to Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, who has had a sneak peek into the report, the BBI team has recommended several significant changes to the country's governance structure.
These changes include the election of the President directly by the people, with the President to serve as Head of State and take charge of Internal Security, Defence, and Foreign Affairs.
The report also recommends the re-introduction of the post of Prime Minister, who will be voted in by parliament and will appoint all other Ministers.
Additionally, the report suggests that 50% of cabinet ministers will come from parliament and the rest will be appointed outside parliament.
The First Runner Up in a Presidential vote will occupy the best office of the Official Leader of the Opposition, with their running mate serving as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
Furthermore, the report recommends that devolved functions like health and agriculture will have their way back to the national government.
Those composing the electoral commission (IEBC) will be recommended by the political parties, and funds released to the county governments will be proportional to the magnitude of the intended development projects.
According to Moses Kuria, the report also recommends the abolition of Nairobi City County, with the Chief Justice expected to quit the Judicial Service Commission.
