Published on June 24, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has found herself at the center of a storm over alleged foreign trips that she claims she undertook to promote Kirinyaga's coffee exports.
Waiguru appeared before a special senate select committee hearing her impeachment motion, where she presented six photographs as proof of her trips to the United States and Italy.
The Members of County Assembly of Kirinyaga had alleged that Waiguru was paid Ksh. 1, 600, 000 for the trips, which they claim she never made.
Waiguru's defense team, led by Mr. Joseph Carilus Otieno, refuted the claims, stating that the governor had always followed due process in awarding tenders.
However, Nominated MCA Kepher Kariuki, who appeared as the second witness for the governor, could not confirm the authenticity of the photographs, stating only that they were not taken in Kenya.
Waiguru's fate now hangs in the balance as the select committee deliberates on her impeachment.
"It is very unfortunate to claim that the governor regularly interferes with the tendering process. We endeavour to ensure that the recruitment of members of the committee is done on a rotational and an ad hoc basis," Mr. Otieno said.
