Kenya confirmed 254 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, taking the national tally to 5,206. The new cases were reported after 4,859 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
The majority of the new cases were reported in Nairobi, with 127 cases, followed by Mombasa with 36 cases.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Mercy Mwangangi announced the new cases during a press conference at Afya House. She also revealed that 41 more patients had recovered from the respiratory disease and had been discharged from various health facilities across the country.
As a result, the total number of recoveries in Kenya stands at 1,823. Dr. Mwangangi also announced that two more patients had succumbed to the disease, bringing the number of fatalities to 130.
According to Dr. Mwangangi, all the new COVID-19 patients are Kenyans, with 186 being males and 68 females. The youngest patient was a 4-year-old child, and the oldest was 92 years old.
Dr. Mwangangi noted that the rate of infection was higher in Mombasa than in Nairobi. She also outlined that patients who would qualify for home-based care must be confirmed to be COVID-19 positive, asymptomatic, or have mild symptoms of coronavirus.
“Such patients should be free of any underlying conditions. Asymptomatic patients put on the home-based program will be discharged at least 14 days from the date of their first COVID-19 test, a period during which they should not have symptoms,” Dr. Mwangangi said.
