On June 24, 2020, a corruption case involving four Nairobi County employees made headlines in the Kenyan media.
According to reports, the four employees - Jacinta Waceera Macharia, Kimolel Korir Philip, Nancy Nanyama Wamang'oli, and Stanley Mwaniki Muriithi - were charged with three corruption charges at the Milimani Law Courts.
The suspects denied the charges, which included receiving a bribe, impersonation, and conspiracy to commit a corruption offense.
Prosecution alleged that the four employees conspired to request a bribe of Sh 100,000 from Khilan Bhikhalal Shah on April 11, 2019, at Mathenge Gardens in Nairobi. They allegedly threatened to charge Shah with operating a business without a permit if he failed to pay the bribe.
Additionally, the prosecution accused the four employees of requesting a financial advantage of Sh 60,000 from Shah on the same date. Korir was also accused of receiving Sh 60,000 from Shah as a bribe.
The four employees were also charged with falsely presenting themselves as persons employed by the Nairobi County government and assuming to be inspecting business permits.
Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi ordered the four employees to be released on a bond of Sh 200,000 and cash bail of Sh 100,000 each pending hearing and determination of the graft case against them.
