On April 29, a sting operation led by General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant Douglas Kanja resulted in the arrest of four police officers for violating orders at a roadblock near Blue Post hotel on the Thika Nairobi superhighway.
At least 10 motorists were also arrested for bribing their way past the roadblock, which was imposed to enforce the cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi Metropolitan area.
Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai ordered the operation following complaints that motorists were passing through the roadblock with impunity after possible bribery of his officers.
“We are processing those arrested for action. People need to know this cessation of movement is serious and aimed at curbing the spread of the disease in the country,” Mutyambai said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had extended the nationwide curfew and cessation of movement in some counties, including Mombasa and Mandera, up to July 7.
As part of the measures to combat the spread of Covid-19, roadblocks have been mounted at various exit and entry points to enforce the order.
