June 24, 2020 - The Ministry of Health has rolled out a home-based care program for COVID-19 patients, sparking debate over its effectiveness.
Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi assured that the program is undertaken in strict compliance with protocols issued by the World Health Organization.
According to Dr. Mwangangi, the program is designed to manage mild symptoms at home, as 78 percent of infected patients are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.
The Ministry has prepared guidelines for the program, which have been translated into Kiswahili, and counties are now required to translate them into local languages.
As of June 24, the Ministry reported that over 6,000 patients had been discharged under the new program.
Dr. Mwangangi emphasized the importance of community engagement in the counties, particularly in dealing with community spread of the virus.
By June 24, the Ministry reported 5,206 infections and 130 deaths in the country.
