Published on June 24, 2020, a STEM online teaching program has reached over 9,000 KCSE candidates in Kenya.
Launched by Dr. Tom Okaya Mboya, the Sub-County TSC Director in Kangema Sub-County, the initiative aims to enhance the capacity of teachers to deliver online learning through interactive platforms like Zoom and Google Classroom.
Initially, the program started with 86 learners eight weeks ago but has since grown to 1,875 learners per subject session, with a diverse student body comprising 31% from national schools, 51% from extra-county schools, 8% from county schools, 4% from sub-county schools, and 6% from private schools.
Dr. Mboya, a trained STEM expert, noted that the initiative has also introduced a parental empowerment program to help supervise children during online learning.
With the program's success, many participating teachers have begun replicating it in their schools to reach more learners, and Dr. Mboya emphasized that with the right gadgets and affordable data bundles, it is possible to expand the program's reach to remote areas and include more students.
