On June 24, 2020, the Government of Kenya broke ground for a Sh350 million modern stadium in Kisumu, marking a significant development in the region's sports infrastructure.
The stadium, named Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, is expected to be completed within six months and will be a major boost to the local economy, according to Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.
CS Amina said that funds for the stadium will be drawn from the Sports Fund, but she expects additional support from the Treasury to ensure the project's success.
The new stadium will provide more options for the Kenyan Premier League and ease the burden on the few stadiums currently approved to host top-flight matches.
Meanwhile, the Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground located in Kisumu has been renamed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Recreational Park.
