On June 24, 2020, Kirinyaga Nominated MCA Kepha Kariuki took the stand as a witness for Governor Anne Waiguru during the impeachment hearing. However, his testimony was marred by inconsistencies and a lack of concrete evidence.
Kariuki, who represents the youth in the assembly, claimed that the county assembly did not conduct public participation when filing Waiguru's impeachment motion. However, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang pointed out that as an elected leader, Kariuki was representing the views of the youth of Kirinyaga, and one of the roles of the County Assembly is representation.
When asked to substantiate claims that some MCAs had complained about their names being included in the list of those supporting the motion without giving any names, Kariuki failed to provide any evidence. In fact, 23 MCAs voted to impeach Waiguru, six abstained, and four were not present.
It is also worth noting that Kariuki had previously filed a petition seeking the High Court to stop the Kirinyaga County Assembly from impeaching Waiguru due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
