On June 24, 2020, Beijing officials announced that the city's coronavirus outbreak was 'under control' after a cluster of infections linked to a wholesale food market was contained through mass testing and containment measures.
The outbreak, which began in early June, had infected 256 people in Beijing, with 253 of those cases linked to the Xinfadi market in the south of the city.
Beijing municipal government spokesman Xu Hejian stated that while the outbreak was under control, the prevention and control situation remained complicated, and officials could not lower their guard.
Lei Haichao, head of the Beijing health commission, praised the effectiveness of the prevention and control measures taken, including lockdowns of residential compounds and mass nucleic acid testing.
Over 2.9 million people have been tested in the city, with 137 cases found through screening.
Many cases have been low-income migrant workers at Xinfadi and nearby restaurants, and the market and dozens of residential compounds have been under lockdown since June 13.
