On June 24, 2020, a viral picture of lions resting on top of a heap of sand with a bulldozer on the side sparked concerns among Kenyans about the construction of a new expressway in Nairobi National Park.

However, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has since denied these claims, stating that the only construction taking place is the improvement of the road joining the KWS headquarters to the central workshop inside the park.

According to KWS, a local contractor is engaged in improving the existing murram road, using materials scooped from a nearby quarry near the standard gauge railway line.

“KWS has recently noted reports appearing in social media platforms insinuating that there is a new express was road being built next to the SGR passing through Nairobi national park. This is not true,” read part of the statement.
