On June 23, 2020, Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Heritage and Culture, Amina Mohamed, announced the construction of a multi-purpose stadium at Kisumu's ASK Show Ground in Mamboleo, during a groundbreaking ceremony she presided over.
The 20,000-capacity facility, initially named the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, is expected to be completed within six months, according to CS Amina.
However, in a surprising twist, the facility's name was changed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground, as declared by CS Amina, Kisumu Governor, Anyang' Nyong'o, and Sports Kenya Director General, Pius Metto, who were present at the groundbreaking ceremony.
