On June 24, 2020, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri officially launched his new party, The Service Party, in a move seen as a step towards the 2022 General Election.

Kiunjuri's journey to forming a new party began in January 2020, just days after being removed from the cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Addressing the press, Kiunjuri stated that he had been consulting with various political players across the country regarding the formation of the new party.

“I’ would like to introduce the entry of The Service Party of Kenya (TSP) into Kenya’s Politics… We have made the commitment to bring forth a platform that will be unequivocal about service delivery to our people as our name suggests,” he said.

Speculation has emerged that the new party could be linked to Deputy President William Ruto, a close ally of Kiunjuri's.

Before being sacked, Kiunjuri was a key figure in Central Kenya, often accompanying the Deputy President on tours in the region.
