On June 19, 2020, open court sessions at the Mombasa Law Courts were halted after 11 staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
According to a statement by Deputy Registrar Christine Ogweno, the affected court premises must be fumigated regularly to prevent the spread of the virus.
Each court is expected to issue a circular on how judges and magistrates will proceed with scheduled matters during the 14-day quarantine period, which commenced on June 19.
During this time, plea taking in criminal cases will be conducted virtually, and ICT coverage within the court premises will be improved.
Chief Justice David Maraga suspended open court sessions in Mombasa on June 19 and directed 118 officers who were primary contacts to the infected persons to undergo mandatory self-quarantine.
The affected courts are the Main Court, the City Court, and Tononoka Children's Court.
Open court sessions are set to resume on July 2, 2020, under stringent coronavirus prevention guidelines.
