Published on June 24, 2020, Nakuru County has announced plans to set up a task force to address the degradation of Lake Naivasha within two weeks.

The task force aims to tackle the high cases of illegal fishing and encroachments on the riparian land, which have been identified as major threats to the lake's ecosystem.

According to Dr. Immaculate Maina, the County Executive Officer in charge of Agriculture, the lake is under serious threat from various quarters, including overfishing, destruction of fish breeding areas, and the invasion of the lake by sacked workers from hotels and flower farms.

Dr. Maina stated that the county is considering imposing a fishing ban but will allow the task force to present its report first.

The task force will be launched by the governor within two weeks and is expected to present its findings within a month.

Additionally, the county has engaged the services of the Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS) to help deal with the poachers who have invaded the lake in the last two months.

Separately, the County CEC for Trade, Raymond Komen, announced that the recently opened Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Mai-Mahiu will change the face of the county, increase revenue, and job opportunities.
