Since 2015, the Kenyan government has made it possible to apply for a passport online through the eCitizen portal, a convenient process that can be completed in under an hour from the comfort of your home.
Published on June 24, 2020, this guide will walk you through the steps to apply for a normal Kenyan passport, which is the most popular type.
Before You Apply ¶
It's essential to note that you may need at least 40 days between your passport application and your travel date to avoid last-minute delays and frustrations.

- Diplomatic Passport: Ksh 7550

Requirements for Passport Application ¶
- Working internet connection
- eCitizen account
- Printer
- Original birth certificate and copy
- Original ID and copy
- Recommender's ID copy
- Parent's ID cards and copies (death certificates are also acceptable)
- 3 current and clear passport photos
- Money in your MPESA according to the number of pages you want for your passport
- Next of kin ID number
- KRA pin
Steps to Follow ¶
- Scan your ID, birth certificate, parent's ID, and recommender's ID and have them ready for upload.
- Log into your eCitizen account and search for the 'Immigration Department' box.
- Click on the 'get services' button and then 'Make application' to choose 'Kenyan Passport'.
- Fill in all the details, including your full names, ID number, birth certificate serial number, physical address, age, gender, purpose for travel, and next of kin ID number.
- Upload the scanned documents and proceed to the payment part.
- Send the money to the PAYBILL number provided and ensure you have enough money to cover the transaction in your MPESA.
- With a successful payment, eCitizen will direct you to a new page where you can download the filled passport forms and the invoice for the payment.
- Print three copies of this form and invoice, attach the passport photos, and take these copies and those of your ID, birth certificate, parent's ID, and recommender's ID to the immigration office of your choice.
