On June 24, 2020, Education CS George Magoha outlined the protocols to be observed after the reopening of schools in September 2020 during a tour of Kilifi County.
He emphasized the importance of adhering to the set conditions to ensure a safe learning environment.
Some of the key conditions include a maximum of 15-20 learners per classroom, with teachers expected to report to their schools two weeks before the reopening date.
Additionally, each learner is expected to be provided with two masks, and all schools will be equipped with thermo guns to aid in determining the temperatures of all individuals seeking access to learning institutions.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has raised concerns about the feasibility of the reopening plan, citing a deficit of 400,000 teachers that would need to be covered for the new teacher-student ratio to be implemented.
It remains to be seen whether more teachers will be hired to address this issue.
