On June 24, 2020, the Kwale County Government received a significant boost in its efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, courtesy of the Red Cross Society of Kenya.

Area Governor Salim Mvurya revealed that the county had secured Ksh 70 million in support from the European Union, which has been instrumental in equipping health centers and deploying healthcare workers across the county.

The funds have enabled the county to set up a Covid-19 treatment unit at the Msambweni Country Referral Hospital, with a bed capacity of 60, and has also invested in preventive sensitization and the employment of more health workers to heighten the efforts of curbing the spread of the virus.

Speaking on the matter, Governor Mvurya emphasized the county's commitment to working closely with development partners and other stakeholders in efforts to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Kenya Red Cross Society has partnered with the Kwale County Government through the Health Department on a Sh 70 million program aimed at helping fight the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on four key areas: capacity enhancement on response teams, equipping referral hospitals, strengthening and requirement mechanisms, and deployment of teams in health facilities.

As part of the partnership, Governor Mvurya and his Deputy Fatuma Achani received a donation of personal protective equipment (PPEs) from the Kenya Red Cross and United Nations Population Fund.
