On March 17, 2020, a significant event shook the Baringo County Assembly when Ameja Zelemoi, the then deputy speaker, was impeached due to allegations of abuse of office and leadership wrangles tied to the 2022 succession politics.
Fast forward to the present, Jacob Cheboiwo, a Jubilee party member and MCA for Kisanana ward in Mogotio sub-county, has taken over as the new deputy speaker. Cheboiwo's election was a result of a court case that cleared him to replace the ousted deputy speaker, who was sponsored by Kanu.
During his swearing-in ceremony, Cheboiwo expressed gratitude to the members for their support, stating that his election was a confirmation of their trust in him to lead the assembly.
Majority Chief Whip Reuben Chepsongol suggested that a committee meeting be convened to identify a new role for the ousted deputy speaker, demonstrating the assembly's commitment to brotherhood. Majority Leader Lawi Kipchumba, who sponsored the impeachment motion, congratulated the speaker and clerk for their impartiality during the stormy session.
Minority Leader Sam Lokales praised the new deputy speaker, describing him as a good leader who knows how to relate with everyone in the house. Other members, including Nixon Lemlem and Richard Kirono, expressed optimism that the new leadership would bring an end to the leadership row and foster harmonious working relationships.
