On June 24, 2020, Laikipia County's department of Health unveiled a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The ICU ward, which is equipped with six ICU beds and 12 High Dependence Unit (HDU) beds, will cater for Covid-19 patients and handle any emergency services that require critical care.
The unit has already been installed with five ventilator machines, which cost the County Government Ksh 35 million.
Speaking after inspecting the facility, Governor Ndiritu Muriithi said his administration will inject another Ksh 35 million for the purchase and installation of ventilator machines at the Nyahururu County Hospital.
Laikipia County is targeting to have a 10-bed ICU capacity and well-trained health workers to combat the spread of Covid-19.
The County Chief also announced plans to establish a Covid-19 testing facility in collaboration with the National government.
