On June 23, 2020, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans to ease the coronavirus lockdown in England, allowing pubs, restaurants, and hotels to reopen from July 4.
Johnson emphasized the importance of people enjoying their new freedom to socialize while still acting responsibly. He expressed his eagerness to visit a pub or restaurant, despite his current diet, and encouraged others to do the same.
As part of the relaxation of social distancing rules, drinkers will only need to stay one meter apart, rather than two, to allow pubs to accommodate more customers. However, visitors to pubs will still be required to provide their contact details.
Johnson also highlighted the need for people to be cautious and follow guidance to prevent the spread of the virus. He mentioned that the government is working to find a way to allow higher-risk activities like playing cricket and visiting the theatre to resume.
Johnson's announcement comes as the government seeks to balance the need to reopen the economy with the need to protect public health.
