Nyeri county government has made significant cuts to its budget for ward development, reducing the allocation from Sh30 million to Sh16 million in the 2020/21 financial year.
According to budgetary estimates, the wards have been allocated Sh260 million for the completion of specific projects that were not finished in the 2019/2020 financial year.
Speaking to Nyakundi Report, Gibson Wahinya, chairman of the budget and appropriations committee, attributed the reduction to the effects of COVID-19, which have led to budgetary cuts.
"This year's county budget has been slashed owing to COVID-19 effects. We understand the challenges, but we are happy that ongoing projects will be completed," Wahinya said.
The county government has presented a budget of Sh5,080,293,621 for the 2020/21 financial year, with 67% allocated towards recurrent expenditure and personnel emoluments.
The assembly will commence debate on the budget on Wednesday and Thursday before giving it a nod.
