Constitutional lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo has faced criticism for representing his wife, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, in the Senate impeachment trial. However, Waiganjo has defended his actions, stating that his services were provided pro bono.
Waiganjo appeared amused by the backlash on social media, with several users complaining about a potential conflict of interest due to the attorney-client relationship between a spouse and their lawyer.
"Pro bono... But seriously???? As in seriously???", Waiganjo wrote on Facebook, seemingly downplaying the issue.
Lawyer Miguna Miguna was among those who criticized Waiganjo's representation of Waiguru, claiming that it could lead to Waiganjo receiving payment from the Kirinyaga County government as legal fees.
"Ms Waiguru has filed her responses with the Senate committee through her legal team led by Kamotho Waiganjo. So, long-suffering Kenyans will pay Kamotho Waiganjo, It is called a CONFLICT OF INTEREST. It is unethical, violates Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and is illegal as it unlawfully allows those occupying public office to PROFIT from those positions. Over to you Law Society of Kenya," Miguna wrote.
