Published on June 24, 2020, former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has thrown his weight behind Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.
Muthama's decision comes after Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka dropped his quest to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022, citing his intention to support President Uhuru Kenyatta for a third term.
Speaking to a local TV station, Muthama emphasized his commitment to drumming up support for Ruto's presidential bid, stating, 'At the moment I'm working on how Ruto will be elected the next president of Kenya with a party that will bring Kenyans together.'
However, Muthama's decision has not gone without controversy. Wiper Party has served him with a two-week notice to explain why he should not face disciplinary action for violating the party's constitution.
Wiper accused Muthama of making political statements that are against the party's ideals and neglecting his duties as a member of Wiper's National Executive Committee (NEC).
Responding to the notice, Muthama clarified that he will not be silenced, stating, 'The day I said I don't want Wiper's certificate is the day I said I am not part and parcel of a party that sells nomination to the highest bidder.'
