Kenya Airways announced plans to resume domestic flights by July 8th, 2020, and international flights by July 14th, 2020, following a temporary suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Routes Online, the national carrier will initially operate local and regional flights to destinations such as Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Diani, Kigali, and Entebbe before resuming long-haul international flights to Amsterdam, London, Paris, Dubai, and Mumbai.
However, upon resumption, the airline will reduce the frequency of long-haul flights until October 24th, 2020. The revised frequency for long-haul routes includes:
- Nairobi – Amsterdam: 3 weekly 787-8
- Nairobi – London Heathrow: 3 weekly 787-8
- Nairobi – Dubai: 5 weekly 787-8 (3 weekly from September 1st, 2020)
- Nairobi – Mumbai: 5 weekly 737-800 (3 weekly from September 7th, 2020)
- Nairobi – Paris CDG: 3 weekly 787-8
Kenya Airways recorded a 12.4% increase in revenue for the financial year ended December 31st, 2019, due to the expansion of its network and improved revenue streams.
Other African countries have also resumed domestic and international flights, including South Sudan, which reopened its airports in May, and Egypt, which plans to reopen all its airports and resume international flights from July 1st, 2020, after being granted a safe travel stamp by the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Additionally, Zanzibar has removed quarantine restrictions and announced the reopening for tourist activities, allowing charter and scheduled flights to bring in tourists and returning residents.
