Kenyan Newspapers Review: IEBC Warns of 2022 Election Result Transmission Fail

On June 24, 2020, various Kenyan newspapers reported on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) warning of a possible failure in the transmission of election results in 2022.

The IEBC cited the lack of maintenance of voting machines used in the 2017 general election as a major concern. The commission's chairman, Ahmed Gulleyi, stated that the reduced budget had affected the commission's ability to prepare for the 2022 general election.

Meanwhile, politicians have begun to prepare for the 2022 general election. Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition, has been touted as a potential successor to President Uhuru Kenyatta. ODM officials have stated that Raila is the best candidate to succeed Uhuru, citing his experience and leadership skills.

Other politicians, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Isaac Ruto, have also begun to prepare for the election. They have signed agreements with the ruling party, signaling a possible shift in their political allegiances.

However, not all politicians are on board with the idea of a new alliance. Moses Wetang'ula and Musalia Mudavadi, leaders of FORD Kenya and ANC, respectively, have been seen building their own alliances, with some speculating that they may support William Ruto as their presidential candidate.

On a separate note, residents of the coastal region have expressed their opposition to the government's plan to relocate the port services from Mombasa to Naivasha. The residents, who are primarily business owners, have threatened to take legal action against the government, citing the economic impact of the move.

Lastly, the governor of Kirinyaga, Anne Waiguru, has been accused of misusing county funds. The allegations include the misuse of funds for personal gain and the failure to provide essential services to the county residents.
