On June 23, 2020, Wiper Democratic Movement chairman Chirau Ali Mwakwere announced that the party had initiated disciplinary proceedings against former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama.

According to Mwakwere, Muthama has 14 days to respond to the allegations, failure to which he would face expulsion.

Wiper deputy party leader Farah Maalim stated that the party would not condone members with divided loyalties, hinting that Muthama's association with Deputy President William Ruto was a major factor in his predicament.

“We cannot put this country in the hands of a person we feel has integrity issues. The party also cannot work with DP and his team because we do not share his ideologies,” said Maalim.

Wiper has accused Muthama of contempt and disregard of the party leadership by spreading malicious propaganda and actively spreading hate among the rank of party membership.

“You have openly been associating yourself with other political parties and politicians who are adversaries of our movement in total disregard of Political Parties Act and the movement rules and regulations,” the party stated in a letter to Muthama.
