On June 24, 2020, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi revealed that Mombasa County has the highest Covid-19 infection rate in Kenya.
According to the latest statistics, Mombasa has an attack rate of 107.9 per 100,000 people, while Nairobi's is 55.2 per 100,000, compared to the country's overall rate of 10.4 per 100,000.
With a population of 1.3 million, Mombasa's high infection rate is a concern, especially when compared to Nairobi's 4.4 million residents.
Dr. Mwangangi emphasized that the risk of contracting Covid-19 is higher in Mombasa than in Nairobi, citing the statistics as evidence.
She also noted that the Ministry of Health is working to define risk levels per county, given that the virus has been reported in 40 counties.
Currently, Nairobi has 2,428 cases, followed by Mombasa with 1,304, then Busia with 361 and Kajiado with 179.
Dr. Mwangangi attributed the high numbers in Nairobi and Mombasa to imported cases and high mobility in these regions.
She also highlighted that 78% of Covid-19 patients are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, which can be managed at home, and proposed home-based care for such patients.
